Back Road BBQ Serves Choice Cuts In Central Vermont

Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is as far from the traditional barbecue hotbeds of America as can be, but that hasn’t stopped Back Road BBQ from bringing the delicious goods day in and day out throughout central Vermont.

The food truck, mainly located in Cabot, has developed a strong customer base thanks to its delicious pork-heavy menu.

“Our team got together in January of 2016 year with an idea and a love of good food,” owner Brock Miller said. “Friends, neighbors and strangers were asking for an addition to the restaurant community, and though we all wanted to cook and work together, there wasn’t a brick and mortar location that fit just right. How do you serve a whole region if you can’t go to them? The rural nature of Vermont is why we love it, but it makes it hard to find a location that works for everyone. The answer? Food truck. The food? BBQ.”

Miller, co-owners Isaac Gresser, Charlie Lee, and Ben Nottermann, and the rest of the team has built the business around the idea that you can still serve farm-to-table, or in this case farm-to-truck, barbecue that maintains the highest quality from start to finish. Nottermann’s farm, Snug Valley Farm in East Hardwick, is where all the hogs the food truck uses for its pork are raised.

“Snug Valley Farm raises their animals in a humane, natural way,” Miller said. “Their heritage breed pigs are never given hormones, stimulants, or fed animal by-products. They’re raised in an atmosphere of loving kindness by Vermont farmers who work hard to be good stewards to the land and the community. And the flavor is the biggest indicator that Snug Valley have the right recipe when it comes to raising hogs.”

The menu includes pulled pork, ribs and smoked chicken. The sides list features all the barbecue classics from mac and cheese and collard greens to cole slaw and cornbread. And don’t forget to try some of their original barbecue sauces and wash your meal down with a glass of maple iced tea.

“I would have to say that our ribs are probably my personal favorite since they are rubbed with our special spice blend and slow smoked using cherry, apple and maple wood,” Miller said. “That said, there is always room for a whole hog pulled pork sandwich with fresh coleslaw, homemade pickles and a little of our signature Sweet and Sticky Maple Bourbon BBQ sauce.”

Back Road BBQ also provides catering service for events ranging from weddings to concerts and everything in between.
