Why Hire Professional Landscape Maintenance: An Interview with Deb Talbot of Lawn Rangers

By Deb Talbot

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Lawn Rangers was started in 1992 and became incorporated in 1998. We started off as a group of ski instructors that skied all winter and mowed lawns in the summer. I started by subcontracting out a high end mowing route from a property Management company. This allowed for a steady and secure cash flow in the early years. If I did not have a route where everyone paid and a group of lawns big enough to support the company I probably would not have made it into the business as fast as I did.

How often should a yard or lawn be maintained in order to stay healthy and beautiful?

Every 5 to 7 days.

What services are required to maintain a lawn?

Mowing weekly and a good fertilization program. Aeration, thatching and overseeding work magic.

What kind of knowledge is required to properly maintain a lawn?

Knowledge of soil.

What are some lawn maintenance services that professionals have the ability to handle where homeowners may not?

Mowing, fertilization, aeration, dethatching and soil samples.

In your opinion, what is the biggest benefits of hiring a professional versus trying to do it yourself?

nicer neater looking lawn, and time to enjoy your life.

Are landscape maintenance personnel typically paid hourly or single-fee based?

typically hourly, or set price based on an hourly average.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you and your company?

word of mouth, social media, and the phone book.
