Training Facility SPECTAC Prescribes Workouts that Reach Individual Goals

By Kelly Church

Tactical and personal training facility SPECTAC creates individualized fitness programs that drive results. Sam Orfanidis and Calvin Sanderson own the gym, two men who also serve as trainers at SPECTAC. Orfanidis said the motivation behind opening their Winooski, VT was to provide an individual training experience.

"Calvin and I have always had strong opinions on exercise, training and the individual," Orfanidis said. "We have worked in gyms that have templates and exercise selections that are very generic, lack variability and may not be in the best interest of the client. Our inspiration is simple; no body is the same. Why would we ever train any body the same?"

Orfanidis described the environment at SPECTAC as laid back, but clients come in ready to work. Clients won't find complicated equipment in the gym, because the focus is on using free weights more efficiently.

"One thing we never wanted was to create an intimidating atmosphere," Orfanidis said. "We create a concept that focuses on teaching the exercises and how to utilize the barbells and dumbbells and various free weights effectively."

Sanderson and Orfanidis are joined by a third trainer at the studio, Aaron Cornell. The three men use their backgrounds in exercise science to piece together individualized workouts that have thought behind them.

"For every exercise, there needs to be a reason why they are doing it," Orfanidis said. "A push up should never be done for the sake of a push up. What we write and create is an exercise prescription."

Aside from personal training, group fitness classes and bootcamps are offered at SPECTAC. Classes are one hour and follow a circuit-training format that is appropriate for clients of all fitness levels. Orfanidis described the gym's bootcamp sessions as a class that allows each person to work at their own level. There are eight to ten stations in each class, and the trainers customize each station's exercises.

"We work for our clients," Orfanidis said. "Without knowing it, our clients create their own programs. From day one [with a] consultation, we ask what their fitness goals will be. From that point we create the exercise prescription that will best get them to their goals."

More details about SPECTAC programs, classes and boot camp schedules can be found on the gym's website, spectac-hfp.com.
