Stream & Brook Fly Fishing Keeps Fly Fishing Fresh and Fun

By Jake Levin

Continuing education is a major theme of fly fishing, a sport which Brian Zinger has dedicated his life to.

"Fly fishing is a sport that you never know everything about," Zinger, a guide and business partner at Stream & Brook Fly Fishing in Middlebury, Vt, said. "We have some of the best fishermen in the state on staff and they guide and instruct, so even the most experienced fly fishers stand to learn some local tricks."

Zinger first came to Stream and Brook solely as a guide in 1998 upon the company's opening, and later partnered with John Synott and Foster Heatherington in 2005. He viewed Stream and Brook as a place where he could make some pocket money as a guide, but had much grander visions down the road as he sought an exit from his day job at IBM: Zinger wanted to become an owner of the company, which would better suit his personality.

"I enjoy having fun with people in an environment that is beautiful and relaxing while trying to catch fish," he said.

Zinger believes that what sets Stream and Brook apart from other fly fishing ventures is the provision of fun, regardless of whether or not the fish are biting. But Stream and Brook will put its clients in a position to be successful in the first place by only using top quality gear to outfit people.

"Many of our guides cut their teeth on the rivers and lakes of Vermont," he said. They are professional, knowledgeable, fun to be with and will work hard to give the best opportunity for catching fish."

First time fly fishers will learn techniques in rod casting, as well as some of the science involved in the sport. For example, fly fishers will learn that there's much more on the diet of a fish than just worms and minnows. Learning to read the water to know where it's most likely to locate fish is also a skill novice fly fishers will be taught.

Add it all together, and people will accomplish their main goal of catching a fish at Stream and Brook Fly Fishing.
