Mind Your Body Pilates Bridges Mental, Physical Elements of Pilates

By Kelly Church

At Mind Your Body Pilates, the exercise philosophy is that the mind and the body must both be connected to get physical fitness. The Shelburne, VT studio offers private and semi-private Pilates classes, all borrowing Authentic Movement Principles: breathing, precision, rhythm, control and more. The studio is based in the home of owner Laurie Kotorman.

"What inspired me to open Mind Your Body Pilates was to create a private studio where clients could exercise without having to enter into a typical gym atmosphere, which can be intimidating ," Kotorman said. "I also like the flexibility a private studio gives me with clients, working out of my home and not having to schedule around other Pilates group classes."

Kotorman said she works with the philosophy of progress, not perfection, which embraces individual goals and growth without judgment.

"While there is nothing wrong with wanting to perfect an exercise or movement sequence, that is not necessarily the goal," Kotorman said. "Ultimately, when we focus on the Pilates principles, the result is feeling great in your body."

The practice of Pilates, according to Kotorman, is one that requires the mind and the body to work together. Clients practice being mindful with each movement, embracing the challenges for improved mental and physical strength. This practice involves patience.

"My role as movement educator is to give you the nudge to build and maintain that mindset by setting attainable, progressive goals," Kotorman said.

Kotorman's Pilates classes include the reformer, the mat, the tower and the Pilates chair. Private lessons are catered to the individual's specific body goals and offers one-on-one attention. Semi-private classes are held with two people, which still allows Kotorman to work with each person individually throughout the class, but makes sessions more affordable for the client.
