Installing Custom Iron Work in Your Home: An Interview with John Baker of Wildflower Ironworks

By John Baker

Tell us a little about your company and the services you offer.

Wildflower Ironworks is a welding and blacksmithing operation. John Baker runs it as a sole proprietor- starting as an apprentice in the trade in 1971, Wildflower Ironworks has been a successful business since setting up in Addison, VT. in 1975. Initially I did the craft show circuit- selling forged chandeliers, unique wood stoves, hardware etc. I also was doing many repairs for farmers and others in the dairy industry in Addison County.

Can you describe what custom iron work is, for people who may not know?

My business has evolved into mainly fabricating and creating railings for residential and commercial clients. Custom ironwork means that I am willing to work with individuals to help them create a solution that seems 'right' for their home, garden or handicap ramps. Creating samples or prototypes in the forge and shop so that there are no surprises is something I feel is very important to provide. I try and use solid stock , especially for exterior railings and projects. Winters are hard on metalwork in Vermont with the snow and ice and salt but if there are no interior hollow spaces to prevent rust from forming on the inside , the exterior can be observed and maintained.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

After 40 years in the trade, I have many architectural contacts and references which seem to keep me busy. For prospective clients I would recommend checking out various websites to get a sense of the quality and different styles, materials that are offered . An email or phone call to express interest is the beginning step. My website is Wildflowerironworks.com - I would be glad to send more photos or set up an appointment to check out your specific needs. On the site are many examples of my work and other contact information.
