How to Manage the Budget for Your Home Remodel: An Interview with Don Girard of DG Construction

By Don Girard

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

My company was est. in 2010 but have been in the trade for 17 years. we are a full service construction company/ general contractor that offers new construction, renovations, custom builds, Decks, Light excavation, Kitchen and bath remodeling, and custom tile work.

What is one of the biggest challenges that people have when they're trying to stick to their remodeling budget?

One of the biggest challenges that I find that some customers have when trying to stick to a set budget is not keeping up with costs while the project is underway. Don't wait till the end of the job for a shocking " grand total" - It will undoubtedly be grander than you ever imagined.

How do you and your clients typically decide on the budget for a home remodeling project?

I tell my customers to know why exactly are they remodeling ? Growing family, home office space, or simply to increase the resale value of the home. Once you know why your remodeling, then its time to figure out exactly how much you can spend. If you know the project will exceed your savings, it's time to think about financing.

Do your homework. compare prices and write down the best deals, that way when you're ready to prepare your budget, you'll have exact figures.

What are some of the key steps that can help homeowners avoid financial surprises during their remodel?

One of the biggest steps to avoid financial surprise is having a plan and sticking to it, you don't want to be half way through a project then decide to start changing things.

It can very easily start to double the cost of labor and the waste of materials when things start getting changed around.

What advice would you give a homeowner who has a limited budget and is choosing from different bids for their building project?

Most people tend to get three or four bids from contractors then take the lowest bidder. To often, it becomes a contest over who makes the biggest computation mistakes and who is the most desperate for the job. if it worked so well, we wouldn't have so many nightmares and horror stories that arise in the industry.

Instead, you might need only two bids, or maybe you will need three or four before your happy with your choice. And the price thats quoted, even if its a bit higher than you wanted, might mean that you will get better quality products and workmanship.

When can extra remodeling/building costs come up and how often does this happen?

This question goes along with the same rule as question three., Avoiding changes. When you start to make changes or start to add things it can get very costly.

This is a very common mistake that is made and happens quite often.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

The best way I can be contacted is calling me directly at 802-342-0574 or through my website www.dgvermont.com
