Give In To The Sweetness: Sweet Surrender Bakery

By Kelly Church

Sweet Surrender Bakery has been serving up sweet treats to the Ludlow, VT area since the 1970s. In 1999, current owner Bonnie McGhie-Allen purchased the bakery as a way of getting back into baking full-time after taking a break from her career as a pastry chef to raise her children. Her bakery offers wedding cakes, breads and pastries.

"We offer a wide assortment of pastries, from donuts to wedding cakes," McGhie-Allen said. "We have six gluten-free items every day and can accommodate almost any allergy or dietary restriction. I enjoy working with people to meet their specific needs. Everything is made from scratch."

Cake flavors at Sweet Surrender Bakery include traditional vanilla, raspberry lemon, chocolate cake and even carrot cake. McGhie-Allen offers a few pre-set combinations, including vanilla cake filled with fruit, or chocolate cakes filled with chocolate ganache and topped with vanilla buttercream. However, she welcomes clients to create their own flavor combinations. All wedding cakes are made with real butter and vanilla for quality flavor.

"I only use top quality ingredients for a cake that tastes as good as it looks," McGhie-Allen said. "My buttercream is not the super sweet sugary type found in many other places."

For breakfast goodies, the bakery opens at 5 a.m. every day with freshly-baked muffins, breads, Danishes, coffee cakes and more. Customers can grab a homemade honey bun with a cup of Mountain Grove Coffee to get their day started.

McGhie-Allen also offers seasonal items for the holidays. Customers can revel in eggnog cheesecake, sour cream apple pie, pumpkin pie or fresh-baked dinner rolls to pair with their holiday meal.

One of McGhie-Allen's proudest moments in her 25-year cake-baking career was making Julia Child's 85 birthday cake. McGhie-Allen said Child has always been an inspiration, and she was thrilled to make the cake that was featured on Good Morning America!

McGhie-Allen can be reached via her website sweetsurrendervt.com. She welcomes anyone with a need for a fresh-baked cake or other dessert to schedule a time to meet with her and see how Sweet Surrender can create the perfect custom baked good.
