Fresh Fashion Finds at Sweet Lady Jane

By Pamela Sosnowski

Sweet Lady Jane has become a fashion fixture in downtown Burlington since it opened in 2003. Says the boutique's owner Rachel Cloutier, "At Sweet Lady Jane, we are fortunate enough to meet people from all over the world. Some comments we hear often are how friendly the staff is and what a great selection of carefully edited pieces (we carry.) People love that we are unique. We believe in what we sell and treat them like family."

Cloutier's motivation for opening the store was to make an impact on fashion in the Burlington area. As part of the Church Street Marketplace open-air shopping mall, it shares good company with popular dining destinations and other retailers. Designer names that the store carries include BB Dakota, Free People, French Connection, and Left on Houston. Whether a customer is seeking a sexy outfit for a date, a getaway swimsuit, or a bit of new bling for their neck or wrist, Sweet Lady Jane constantly stocks new fashion selections to appeal to all types of fashionistas. "We carry anything from edgy bohemian to classic," says Cloutier. "I feel that we appeal to all age groups - depending on how our pieces are styled."

With twenty years of experience as a buyer, Cloutier regularly attends trade shows looking for pieces that her customers will want. "I try to stay true to the Sweet Lady Jane brand/image," she explains.

Although Sweet Lady Jane has a sister store named Trinket that focuses exclusively on accessories, shoppers will always find an arsenal of jewelry, handbags, and more thanks to Cloutier's close relationship with area suppliers. "We always have a great selection of contemporary jewelry," she says. "We work with local designers and small companies to bring an unusual selection to Burlington. I personally like really unusual pieces and try to share that love with our customers. In the colder months, we have hand knit scarves, socks and cool leather handbags. We have also ventured into scents - a great line from Colorado and a handmade perfume from Paris."

The shop participates in local community events such as the upcoming Fashion's Night Burlington, an annual celebration of style and glamour where Church Street Marketplace stores showcase their newest fall fashions, sales, and hold giveaways. This year's event on September 25 from 5 to 9 PM includes a runway walk down Church Street and a photo booth, and customers are invited to the store to socialize and browse the merchandise.

Sweet Lady Jane is open seven days a week - so the next time you're seeking that perfect fashion piece or accessory, step into the boutique and see what's in style!
