Different Types of Flooring: An Interview with Phyllis Donohue of New England Floor Covering

By Phyllis Donohue

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

New England Floor Covering has been a local Vermont business for over 30 years. Nigel Mucklow, the original founder and his partner Russ West, started the company by originally manufacturing specialty carpet in a small mill in Winooski. As it became tough to compete with the larger mills in Georgia, they discontinued the carpet production and started up a retail store on Dorset Street in South Burlington where they began selling commercial and residential flooring. New England Floor Covering is unique in that we are one of Vermont's largest commercial flooring dealers and also have a large showroom showcasing all the current residential flooring trends.

Please list 5 different types of flooring materials that exist on the market with a short explanation/list of benefits for each (e.g. hardwood, carpet, linoleum, laminate, etc.)

Carpet Tile ? one of our number one selling floors. Perfect solution for commercial businesses ? installs quickly, tiles can easily be replaced in traffic patterns without replacing the entire floor.

Luxury vinyl tile/plank ? our second most popular floor. Look just like ceramic tile or hardwood flooring. Extremely durable. Used heavily in commercial and retail and becoming more popular in residential.

Marmoleum ? popular sheet product ? Green product made from wood/cork flours and linseed oil. Dynamic color range. Used heavily in schools and residential kitchens and baths. Super easy to clean/maintain.

Wool carpet ? Another popular green product. We have Vermont's largest selection with price points for all budgets. Wool is a natural product and is extremely durable.

Prefinished wood flooring ? Can be walked on immediately, installed over concrete and radiant flooring. Wide range of widths, stain colors and species available.

Out of these types, which is the most common and why?

Prefinished hardwood and broadloom wool carpets are the most popular residential floorings we sell. Today's consumers are looking for durable products that are easy to maintain that also have a responsible environmental story.

Which is typically the most expensive per square foot?

Hardwood flooring and ceramic tiles are the more expensive flooring options. Again, they are permanent floors in one's home that are long-term flooring solutions.

Which is the least expensive?

Generally polyester broadloom carpets, vinyl wood plank and sheet vinyl products are the most economical products we sell.

For DIYers, which is the easiest to install?

Laminate, engineered hardwood and vinyl plank or tile flooring with a click interlocking system are easiest to install. These products can generally float over an existing flooring.
