Davis Studio Inspires Creativity That Affects All Aspects of Life

By Kelly Church

Founded in 2003 by Teresa Davis, Davis Studio fosters the imagination and nurtures creativity for students of all ages, adults and children. The South Burlington, VT studio is part classroom, part gallery. Davis, a self-taught artist and former elementary school teacher, is now the director of the art studio and believes that the arts give kids an opportunity to explore more than just creativity.

"From an early age, children who come here learn to problem solve and take creative risks, leading to artistic confidence," Davis said. "This confidence spills into other areas as well, helping them become curious and joyful learners across the curriculum."

One of Davis Studio's programs is the Art and Academic Enrichment Program. With more than 100 participants, the Art and Academic Enrichment Program divides groups by age to explore a variety of topics in depth through the arts.

"Some of our themes this year are China, oceans, creating graphic novels and ancient Rome," Davis said. "Each day is filled with both learning and creating as students spend much of their time working on art projects which extend their thematic learning. This program gives homeschoolers a weekly classroom experience and provides consistent social connections."

During classes at Davis Studio, students have the opportunity to explore several different artistic mediums: painting, sculpture, glass and more. Between camps and individual classes, young children are able to experience creative mediums they might not otherwise get to explore.

"Davis Studio is a place of empowerment and joy," Davis said. "Teachers are welcoming and supportive of artists of all ages (preschool through adult). We love working with children, teens and adult emerging artists. Our focus is to help each student stretch and grow, while ensuring they maintain their unique perspective and artistic voice."

Davis Studio hosts paint nights. Paint & Sip is for adults 21 and older to enjoy a drink while they embrace their creativity, Family Painted Canvas for family painting on a blank canvas, and Family Painted Pottery for custom at-home trinkets. For family painting nights, children must be accompanied by an adult.

Individualized lessons can be scheduled at Davis Studio. With many experienced instructors on staff and a few guest instructors, students can be sure that they will learn from the best. Private lessons are $60 for ninety minutes. Semi-private lessons with two students is $80 for ninety minutes. Small group lessons for three students are $100.

The gallery portion of the studio features professional artists and student artists that create work at Davis Studio. Currently, the professional artist featured is Celeste Forcier who specializes in watercolor painting. Her work is primarily floral still life paintings.

In the Starving Artist Café Student Gallery, a handful of teenage students have their art displayed, after spending a week in a summer camp at Davis Studio. During the five-day camp, students learn new techniques and instructors help them develop their own sense of artistic style that can be seen in the gallery's paintings.
