Customers Can't Get Enough of Cake and Crumb Bakery

By Pamela Sosnowski

A passion for making desserts and baked goods that started in her childhood with her grandmother and mother was now leaving little space at home for Susan Camley to prepare regular meals. After teaming up with her daughter, Julie Rogers, Susan began renting a building at 27 Winter Street in Morrisville and they opened Cake & Crumb Bakery in 2014. Today, the duo makes and sells custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, turnovers, pies, and freshly brewed coffee at the neighborhood bakeshop.

"We are a mother-daughter team that love working together to bring affordable, fresh baked goods to the community," Camley said. "We make all of our cakes fresh to order and make all of our own icing."

Camley and Rogers use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, and all their bakery items are made from scratch, including the pie crust. The pies are so notable, in fact, that Cake & Crumb won the 2016 Best Pie in Lamoille County Award from local television station WCAX on a pie tour of Vermont. They use local fruit that is in season to add to the freshness. Camley even freezes freshly harvested rhubarb so they can offer their customers a strawberry rhubarb pie in the dead of winter made with ingredients that taste like they were harvested that day.

For custom cake creations, Camley and Rogers have created everything from elegant wedding cakes to a unicorn cake for a child's birthday party. One of their most elaborate designs was a cake in the shape of stacked books for a local book club, complete with a bookworm on top. Frostings are available in flavors such as peanut butter, maple, salted caramel, and more. Camley and Rogers are happy to work with customers on cake ideas and icing flavors to dream up a design that is perfect for the event they have in mind.

Local customers and tourists passing through the town have been raving about Cake & Crumb since its opening. "Moist" and "best tasting" are two terms that come up repeatedly in online reviews. Customers also cite the shop's friendly atmosphere with Camley and Rogers' attention to stellar customer service as two distinctions that make the bakery a special place.

"We are a family friendly bakery," Rogers said. "We also take the time to make sure we are giving the customer just what they want, (and) we try to work with every budget."

Every day there are fresh cupcakes for sale in rotating flavors. The shop creates holiday-themed baked goods, filling orders for Thanksgiving pies and Christmas sugar cookies. The bakery also offers gluten-free goods and has started to sell them at the MOCO (Morriville Co-Op) where they share shelf space with a few other local food bakeries.

Camley and Rogers love to experiment with flavors to come up with new and exciting cake and cupcake recipes. As much as they love the actual creation process, their favorite part of the job is seeing the expression on customers' faces when they arrive to pick up their order.

"When a customer comes in to pick up their cake and says, 'Wow, that's great!' or contacts us later that the cake was fantastic then we know we have accomplished our mission," they said. "We love to make cakes that make people happy."
