Concinnity Ceremonies Personalizes Your Special Day

By Mike Abelson

The word concinnity is defined as 'The skillful and harmonious arrangement or fitting together of parts with respect to a whole.' Fiona Creed Chevalier is skillful at those harmonious arrangements and turned it into her business, Concinnity Cermonies.

Based in Vermont, Concinnity Ceremonies helps guide its clients to a tailor-made ceremony for whatever event they need. Fiona helps create personalized ceremonies for every event from birth to death and everything in between. Fiona went into detail about her inspirations and motivations behind her unique work.

What first inspired you to open Concinnity Ceremonies? How long have you been open?

In 2002 a dear friend of mine was struggling with menopause. We decided to create a ceremony to bring her into life as an elder. This magical evening brought together women in all stages of life to celebrate where she had been and welcome her into her wise-woman years. This event was the seed that eventually changed my life.

I began offering my services to officiate weddings for friends, welcome new babies into our community, celebrate the beginning of new jobs, and honor struggle and survival. This opportunity to serve my community was the perfect blend of my professional work as an educator and freelance facilitator with the personal desire to make meaning in our lives and honor people for who they are, where they are and their hero's journey.

In 2008 I became trained through the Celebrant Foundation and Institute as a Certified Life-Cycle Celebrant. My freelance facilitation business morphed from Conncinnity to Concinnity Ceremonies. The name still fit. Since then I have had the honor of a serving a wider community of folks, in order to create personal unique ceremonies to celebrate your stories, your transitions, your lives.

Can you explain to me a little more about what it means to be a Life-Cycle Celebrant?

A Life-Cycle Celebrant is an individual trained in the art of ceremony, open to all cultures beliefs and ideas. We work with clients to create and officiate over a wide range of ceremonies from cradle to grave. The stories, beliefs, and values of our clients are the inspiration for the handcrafted ceremony that is created. The ceremony is designed to reflect our clients: as an individual, a couple, a family, a community or the story of whom you are honoring. Examples of our services are, but not limited to, baby blessings, milestone anniversaries, weddings, vow renewals, transition ceremonies (avocation, marital status, gender, location) age rites of passage (becoming a teen, adult, parent, elder) house blessings (new and old), healing ceremonies, ceremonies for end of life celebrations, memorials, funerals and burials.

You are given the chance to play a part in people's most special life events. What do you enjoy most about this opportunity?

It is such an honor that I get to help develop and bear witness to the most meaningful moments in people's lives. It is not often in our busy modern lives that we take the opportunity to be truly human with one another. Over and over again I am blown away with my clients humanity. I get to be with people in their most vulnerable moments, full with all the emotions that make us human. It is humbling. I hold space for them to share their humanity with each other and the community of their choosing. It is an amazing thing to behold. Whether the tone is silly or somber, irreverent or most sacred. It is beautiful and transformative.

It is also so fun to give folks permission to engage in ceremony the way they want to do it. Very often people will ask me how things are supposed to be done. And the answer is very simple 'what feels right to you?' Once my clients aren't worried about doing it right, then the magic of what is supposed to happen unfolds.

Why do you think someone should choose you for their commitment services or milestone celebrations?

Whether you want to make simple ceremony with a close family in the comfort of home, ask a group of friends to convene in nature, or host hundreds for a formal affair: I'm your gal. The ceremony is all you: the client. I listen to you and weave your story with your beliefs and desires to create a ceremony for you, your family, and your community. I believe in the power of taking time to make a moment special. Whether it is to honor a being coming into the world, the transitions one goes through in life or a life that has past; it is all important. Every life, every story deserves to be told with love and grace and joy. Ceremony can range from large and formal to the most intimate of a single person lighting a candle. It is that time of reflection to honor where you are in life that makes it all worthwhile. I will help you to create the most amazing ceremony that suits your needs, by being present with you, sharing my knowledge with you, and being with you every step of the way.
