Burlington Country Club Offers World-Class Golfing and Family-Friendly Atmosphere

By Pamela Sosnowski

Think of Burlington, Vermont and you might think of the city's colleges, lakeside setting, and lingering 1960s earthiness. But just a few miles from Burlington's downtown shops and restaurants is one of the state's oldest and most prestigious golf courses: Burlington Country Club (BCC). "We are extremely proud to be over 90 years old," says Jason Shattie, the club's General Manager. Founded in 1924, we have since carried on many traditions while also evolving to remain one of Vermont's premier country clubs."

BCC's standout feature is a course designed by Donald J. Ross, a Scottish-born golf course architect who built almost 400 courses throughout the U.S. and Canada during his nearly 50-year old career. "His stamp as an architect was taking advantage of the natural site terrain," explains Shattie. "Tees and greens were closely placed to make the course easily walked." They were easily walkable, but not always so easy to play - and golfers appreciate the challenge. In 1998, the country club had the 18-hole course restored while still preserving the character that Ross was known for.

The club promotes a family-friendly atmosphere with several membership levels and year-round events for those that join. Among the amenities for golfers are a long-range practice facility encompassing 33,000 square feet of hitting space, a short-range practice facility, a practice bunker, target greens, and chipping and putting green. Private and group golf lessons are offered, and the golf shop is staffed by PGA professionals. Additionally, there's a heated swimming pool and private clubhouse with a grill room and terrace.

As with their varied membership levels, the club strives to offer something for everyone, and that includes a wide variety of special events. "We host a number of socials including an opening event, a summer concert series with live entertainment, holiday mixers and a club closing lobster bake and concert," says Shattie. "We've also recently integrated themed specialty dinners and cooking classes into the mixture of events we hold for our membership." For those that golf, several tournaments take place at BCC throughout the year, ranging from one-day tournaments to those taking place over several days that include live entertainment and dining.

Being in Burlington ensures an engaged and active membership for the BCC, and the location has worked out well for the club. "What we love most about Burlington is the community," says Shattie. "It's a community that supports one another and understands the importance of local business and ensuring a future for younger generations in the state of Vermont. We feel very fortunate to be involved and located (here)."

Burlington County Club is located at 568 South Prospect Street in Burlington, VT.
